*NEW* Building Inspector Training Academy:

The Department has introduced a new Building Inspector Training Academy, aimed at equipping participants with the essential knowledge and hands-on experience needed to pursue a professional career as a building inspector with the City of Cincinnati. This intensive 48-week program is designed to attract a diverse group of entry-level candidates who possess the aptitude, relevant experience, and passion for public service.

The Academy blends classroom instruction with fieldwork. The first 24 weeks focus on construction fundamentals and building code education, while the remaining 24 weeks consist of supervised field inspection training. During this phase, participants apply their classroom knowledge in real-world scenarios under the guidance of an Ohio Board of Building Standards–approved Training Supervisor.

Uniquely, this locally developed Academy is the first of its kind to receive approval from the Ohio Board of Building Standards. It enables the City to hire promising individuals and guide them through the certification process required for success in the field.

The City of Cincinnati typically recruits a new cohort for the Building Inspector Training Academy annually. Interested applicants must take a civil service exam to qualify for the eligibility list, which remains valid for one year following the test.

The Department also offers career advancement through established Permit Technician and Inspection Career Ladders. These pathways provide inspectors with opportunities for upward mobility based on structured training and experience milestones.
