Landmark Status Recognizes Civil Engineers’ Contribution to Society

The leadership of the Cincinnati Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) proudly announce it has nominated the designation of “ASCE National Civil Engineering Historic Landmark” to the Old River Station facility, located at the Greater Cincinnati Water Works (GCWW) Richard Miller Treatment Plant.

The Old River Station steam pump plant contains four of the largest triple-expansion, crank-and-flywheel water pumping steam engines in the world. The engines are housed in the GCWW station on the north bank of the Ohio River, on the eastern end of Cincinnati.

Once the Historic Landmark status is granted by ASCE National, a bronze marker at the plant will acknowledge the Station and modern water filtration processes refined in Cincinnati. The great strides made by civil engineers locally enabled a 90 percent reduction of typhoid fever in the region by 1908.
