What happened?  

On July 17, an extreme storm dropped 5-6 inches of rain in about one hour across Oakley, Madisonville, Hyde Park, Pleasant Ridge and Mt. Lookout, along with Norwood and Fairfax. The National Weather Service has classified this as a 1,000-year storm. No modern sewer system is designed to handle rainfall of this magnitude. 

How do I clean up safely? 

• Photograph damage and write a list of damaged property. 

• Contact your insurance provider. 

• Open doors, windows, cabinets and closets; run fans and dehumidifiers. 

• Clean and disinfect all surfaces affected by floodwater. 

• Dispose of damaged materials per waste collection guidelines. 

Am I eligible for assistance? 

Property owners and tenants who experienced wastewater backing up into their building may be eligible under the Sewer Backup Program (details below). 

What is MSD’s Sewer Backup Program (SBU)?  

The SBU Program provides these services to eligible residents: 

• Investigation of the conditions of the possible sewer backup. 

• Cleaning services. 

• Reimbursement of qualifying damages for eligible properties. 

• Prevention systems or devices

What about the Duck Creek Floodgate? 

During Friday's storm, the Duck Creek Floodgate on Madison Road did not automatically close due to mechanical malfunction. The City has identified properties in the immediate area of the floodgate and contacted property owners to assess damage and offer assistance. It is important to note that the floodgate is designed to mitigate flooding in the small footprint immediately surrounding it, meaning that the failure to close did not have an effect Citywide.
