Mosaic Unveiling at Greater Cincinnati Water Works’ Main Station
Cincinnati, OH – The East End Area Council (EEAC), Keep Cincinnati Beautiful, Prus Construction and Greater Cincinnati Water Works (GCWW) have partnered to bring a historically-based artistic perspective to the East End Community. Local artists John and Marcia Koverman were commissioned to create mosaic panels depicting scenes of past community residents and workers. The first four (4) mosaic pieces of art are complete and ready for installation, and will be mounted on GCWW’s Main Station floodwall.
Background: The EEAC assembled a project team which applied for and won a $5000 Clean and Safe Grant from Keep Cincinnati Beautiful. The project goals included community beautification as well as deterrence of crime and graffiti.
The Main Station floodwall was selected for these improvements due to its prominence and status as one of the greatest architectural landmarks in the East End. Supporters of this project are enthusiastic for the opportunity to enhance the floodwall appearance and create a landmark façade. The design includes both a trellis system and mosaics.
Laurie Keleher of the EEAC said, “This art installation is an excellent example of how powerful the collaborative interests and efforts of private citizens, public servants, organizations, and communities can be.”
The mosaics are similar to the famous Union Terminal mosaics, with recognizable workers from both Water Works and the community. The project team ensures this project is low-impact; low-maintenance; and fully funded – which both GCWW and the East End can be proud of. The regionally-recognized art work complements the beautiful architecture and the flood wall.
The Artists: In 1990, Koverman Studio was founded after experimenting and developing practical and economical processes for working with mosaic tile. The resulting work has been represented throughout the country by tile showrooms, galleries and private designers. It has ranged in scale and complexity from residential to commercial spaces and public works projects; and has been shown in several national publications.
