Cincinnati ECC & CFD Provide July 4th Safety Guidance
Jul 01, 2026
Cincinnati, OH – The Cincinnati Fire Department (CFD) and Emergency Communications Center (ECC) urges residents and visitors to celebrate Independence Day safely this holiday weekend and to practice safe celebration habits all summer long. Independence Day ranks among the busiest days of the year for 9-1-1 call centers and first responders nationwide. The City of Cincinnati hopes to help prevent emergencies and ensure emergency phone lines and personnel are available for those who need emergency assistance by reminding residents that the discharge, ignition, or use of consumer fireworks is not permitted within city limits. This includes all parks, recreational fields, trails, and adjoining parking lots and facilities. These spaces are where violations commonly occur, diverting significant City manpower and resources to manage enforcement and cleanup.
For those who may travel to a jurisdiction where consumer fireworks are legally permitted, the safety information below is provided to help ensure those fireworks are used responsibly.
Firework Safety
The safest way to enjoy fireworks is by attending a community event with a professional fireworks display. Professional displays are conducted by trained, licensed operators and are designed with safety measures in place to protect spectators, nearby property, and the surrounding community. You are invited to view fireworks at professional events held in Cincinnati Parks.
-
Dispose of Fireworks Properly: Soak used fireworks in water before discarding to reduce the risk of fire. Once cooled, fireworks cannot be recycled and must be placed in your trash cart.
-
Be Prepared: Keep a fire extinguisher, hose, or bucket of water nearby in case of accidental fires.
-
Keep Children Away: Never allow children to handle fireworks, lighters, or other flammable materials.
-
Items like sparklers may be thought of as child-friendly but burn at dangerously high temperatures. Consider alternatives like silly string or glow sticks.
-
Maintain Safe Distances: Do not use any combustible objects near people, buildings, or flammable materials.
If you or someone you know needs emergency help - such as a building or grass fire, injuries, or an active threat to people caused by fireworks or any other hazard - call 9-1-1 immediately.
For information on fireworks and to report nonemergency firework activity, Cincinnatians can visit 311Cincy.com and call 3-1-1 or 513-765-1212.
Fire and Injury Prevention During Summer Celebrations
Holiday gatherings and summer activities can pose safety risks if precautions are not taken. Whether you're hosting a cookout, attending a pool party, or enjoying time at a park, a few simple steps can help prevent accidents:
-
Protect against heat-related illness: Limit sun exposure, take breaks in shaded areas, and watch for signs of heat exhaustion or heatstroke.
-
Practice grill and fire safety: Keep grills and open flames away from buildings, flammable materials, and children. Never leave fires or hot surfaces unattended.
-
Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day, especially during periods of high heat and sun exposure.
Taking these precautions can help ensure celebrations end safely, not unexpectedly.
