Proposed Sale of 2454 Cumberland Street in Mt. Auburn

Background:

In 2021, the City Manager directed the Department of City Planning and Engagement to conduct Community Engagement activities for projects that meet the following criteria:

  1. When the City Administration will propose to Council an appropriation for a loan or grant of public funds of $50,000 or more to support a specific private development project; or

  2. When the City will sell or provide a long-term ground lease of City-owned land or buildings with a fair market value of $50,000 or more to support a specific private development project

Proposed Project:

Kingsley + Co., the applicant, proposes the purchase of portions of City-owned right-of-way and property in Mt. Auburn. The request includes approximately 0.0651 acres of Cumberland Street right-of-way, approximately 0.2523 acres of Burnet Avenue right-of-way, and a City-owned parcel at 2454 Cumberland Street (0.03 acres). The applicant has control of all properties abutting the portions of City-owned right-of-way and property they wish to purchase. The applicant seeks ownership of the subject properties to convert them into a secure, private drive to eliminate issues of crime, dumping, and ongoing maintenance issues. The property was appraised at $97,635, requiring community engagement.

A virtual Community Engagement Meeting was held on February 27 at 4:00 p.m. A summary of that meeting and the presentation shared can be found below.

The City Planning Commission reviewed the item at their regular meeting on March 3, 2023. They heard concerns from nearby residents about the potential closure of portions of Burnet Avenue and Cumberland Street. They held the item in order for additional community engagement to take place.

The applicant, the Mt. Auburn Community Council, the Mt. Auburn Community Development Corporation, and City staff will hold a public meeting April 6, 2023. Additional details and the formal notice can be found below.
