Proposed Zoning Code Text Amendments - Sandwich Board Sign Regulations II

Background and Proposed Project

On May 10, 2023, City Council referred the proposed text amendment to the Department of City Planning and Engagement to begin the approval process to permit sandwich board signs in three more neighborhoods – Mt. Airy, College Hill, and Hyde Park (see proposed ordinance below).

Previous text amendments made to Section 1437 “Urban Design Overlay Districts” were approved by the commission in October of 2021 and in October 2022. The 2021 amendments included language permitting lists of contributing and non-contributing buildings to a district, clarifications to the construction and demolition process, and changing the reviewing body for development permissions from the ZHE to the ZBA. The 2022 amendments allowed sandwich board signs in UDODs if a neighborhood chose to do so. At that time, Mt Washington’s decided to allow them in their UDOD. Now three more neighborhoods are also seeking to allow them in their UDODs.
