Starting Garbage Collection Service
Are you looking for information about how to start getting your garbage collected in the City of Cincinnati?
The City of Cincinnati's Department of Public Services (DPS) provides weekly garbage collection for residential properties that meet the definition of "dwelling," as adopted by Ord. No. 41-2013.
Existing Buildings
If you live in a single-family home, or a building that contains no more than four residential dwelling units:
- You must purchase a privately-owned trash cart of an approved type and register that trash cart to begin services. City-approved carts must have a lift pocket and a steel lower lift bar for fully automated and/or semi-automated collection systems.
- Do you already have your cart? Proceed to: Register a Trash Cart
If you live in a building with five or more dwelling units, or for commercial buildings:
- All other dwelling units are considered commercial entities. This City of Cincinnati does not offer collection services at these properties.
- All commercial entities are required to enter into a contract with a City of Cincinnati registered waste hauler for the disposal of their waste.
- To explore options, see: Commercial Waste Hauler Program
New Residential Buildings
If you have recently moved into a newly constructed single-family home, or a newly constructed building that contains no more than four residential dwelling units:
- Call 311 or 513-765-1212 to request a city-issued trash cart.
- This is a one-time service for newly constructed residential buildings; additional carts or replacement carts are the responsibility of the property owner.
- Please submit this request no more than one week before the home is occupied to prevent theft or the placement of construction debris in the carts.
