National Safe Routes to School Demonstration Project

Oct 12, 2022

The City of Cincinnati celebrated national Walk and Roll to School Day by launching a demonstration project testing a new type of curb extension on Linn St at Chestnut St in the West End. This is a popular walking route for children traveling between Hays Porter Elementary and the Lincoln Recreation Center.

Curb extensions are typically constructed of concrete, and can cost up to $100,000 a pair. The city was awarded a grant from the National Center for Safe Routes to School to test the use of “pre-formed thermoplastic” curb extensions. Pre-formed thermoplastic is available in many colors, and comes in sheets that can be cut to any size. Construction of this project was completed in two days and cost a total of $15,000.
