Streetcar Progress Update: Week Ending April 24, 2014

Trackwork is still holding tight at 6,621 feet to date. Crews spent a little extra time this week building the curve at Henry & Elm due the complexity of the curves.

One difference between curved- and straight-track construction is that through the curve, the inside rail has a second piece of rail bolted to it. The purpose of this second piece (or restraining rail) is to help the wheels of the streetcar stay secured to the track as it moves through a curve.

A different type of welding machine was here this week welding several curved pieces of rail together. This machine, called a flash butt welder, offers a stronger weld which is needed in the sharp curves.

Crews continue to erect structural steel at the Maintenance & Operations Facility this week with the help of a large crane that lifts steel into place. The building is really beginning to take shape with the second floor built.

Traffic Alerts

• Reminder: The westbound lanes of Central Parkway will remain closed until 7 a.m. Monday, April 28, so crews can install curved track across the Race Street/Central Parkway intersection.
• On-street parking will be restricted on eastbound Court Street between Main and Walnut streets beginning Tuesday, April 29 and continuing for about two weeks for work on the streetcar's electrical system.
