Cincinnati Streetcar Team to Hold Disability Awareness Day

Event to help individuals with disabilities become familiar with using the streetcar

CINCINNATI – The Cincinnati Streetcar is one of only two systems in the country to offer 100 percent low-floor vehicles, making it even easier for individuals with disabilities to use.

To celebrate this and to help individuals with disabilities become more familiar with how to catch, ride and travel along the streetcar route, there will be a Streetcar Disability Awareness Day on Saturday, July 30 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Washington Park, 14th & Elm streets.

Attendees will have the opportunity to board the streetcar, learn how to pay their fare and get tips to ensure a safe experience when using the streetcar.

The streetcars low-floor boarding allows individuals using wheelchairs and other mobility devices to easily board without the need for ramps or other assistance. In addition, streetcars have designated priority seating areas for seniors and people with disabilities and visual and audible warnings.

Here are a few additional safety tips for individuals with disabilities:

• Don’t cross in front of a moving streetcar
• People using wheelchairs and other mobility devices should cross the tracks at a right angle. Be careful – wheels can get caught in the track gap.
• Stop and look – streetcars are very quiet…cross only at designated crosswalks with signals.
