Gilbert Avenue Gateway Program

This gateway links many of Cincinnati’s Institutions and neighborhoods to downtown. The design concept is focused on enhancing islands, street trees, and a total reworking of the pedestrian bridge over Gilbert at Court Street to become a gateway bridge with a light cannon.

The City and State will construct new traffic islands to reduce the scale of the roadway and to provide an opportunity to install landscaping. In addition, new tree wells will be constructed and new trees planted on the northwest side of Gilbert.

The City and State will also completely renovate the existing pedestrian bridge located at the intersection of Gilbert Avenue and Court Street. New ornamental fencing will replace the existing vandal screening. New towers will be added at each end of the bridge, constructed of ornamental metal work which will provide the bridge with a sense of importance and scale. Decorative lighting, including the installation of a light canon will help identify the function of the bridge as a gateway during the night.

Private sponsorship is needed for the ongoing energy costs and maintenance of the decorative bridge lighting as well as for the design, implementation, and maintenance of the landscaping program.
