Marburg Avenue Bridge Beams To Be Delivered & Set Thursday, Friday
CINCINNATI – The new Marburg Avenue Bridge is taking shape. A major construction milestone will be reached this week when crews begin to set pre-cast concrete beams on Thursday, July 20 and Friday, July 21.
Trucks will deliver the 57 beams in batches throughout both days. Starting at 7:00 a.m. Thursday, a crane will be set up, followed by the arrival of the first load of beams at approximately 8:00 a.m. The crane will lift each beam and set it in place on a continuous basis from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. both days.
The bridge, which replaces its predecessor at the same location, will be 83 feet long and 64 feet wide. It will accommodate two-way traffic and include a left turn lane onto Wasson Road.
The new bridge is still on schedule to reopen by September 16, 2017.
“We’re pleased the contractor remains on schedule and within budget,” said Michael Moore, Director, Department of Transportation & Engineering (DOTE). “We also recognize how inconvenient the closure has been to residents and commuters in this busy area, and we greatly appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding.”
Crews began clearing the site, which sits in a ravine over former Norfolk & Southern railroad lines, in mid-March, followed immediately by demolition of the old bridge.
In the last three months, crews have constructed extensive temporary shoring, poured new concrete foundations, and built the north and south abutments, and piers, each which stand approximately 20 feet tall.
The beams will be set across the abutments and piers. Once the beams are set, crews will connect them with steel rods and grout. A layer of reinforced concrete will be placed on top of the beams that will create the roadway deck surface of the bridge. A similar but separate layer of concrete also will be poured to create the raised, 8-foot wide sidewalks on both sides of the bridge.
Crews this week are constructing wingwalls adjacent to the north abutment and remodeling an existing retaining wall along Wasson Road.
The cost to replace the bridge is $2.1 million. It is being paid for with state and federal grants.
