Dog Etiquette and Dog Park Etiquette in Cincinnati Parks

Whether you’re taking a walk through one of Cincinnati’s beautiful parks or letting your furry friend burn off energy at a dog park, every visitor plays a part in keeping parks safe and enjoyable for everyone. Here are just a few simple ways to be a responsible dog owner while enjoying the park. 

Keep Your Dog Leashed  

Unless you are inside one of the designated off-leash dog parks, your dog should always be on a leash. This improves the safety of your dog and other guests and helps prevent local wildlife from interacting with your pet. A shorter leash helps maintain better control and makes passing other guests and animals easier and safer.  

Clean Up After Your Dog 

Make sure to pick up your dog’s waste every time and dispose of it properly. Leaving waste behind doesn’t just create an unpleasant experience for other park visitors, but it can spread disease and cause harm to the environment. Since dog urine and waste can destroy horticulture and plantings, we recommend dogs use the bathroom near sewer drainages, concrete curbs, grave, or grass. 

Be Courteous to Other Park Visitors 

Not everyone is comfortable around dogs. If your dog begins barking excessively, calmly redirect its attention and move away from the trigger. Be considerate of others by addressing constant barking promptly or leaving if loud barking persists. On narrow trails, move to the side and have your dog sit/stand next to you until others have safely passed.  

Respect & Protect Wildlife 
Our parks are home to many species of wildlife. Help protect all creatures by preventing dogs from chasing or disturbing squirrels, birds, geese, deer, coyotes, and other native animals.

Dog Park Etiquette 

Dog parks are great places for dogs to exercise off-leash and to socialize, but they work best when everyone does their best to follow good dog etiquette. 

Before You Enter 
  • Keep dogs leashed until you are inside the designated off-leash area and leash them again before exiting. 
  • Only bring dogs that are healthy, up to date on vaccinations, and wearing identification or a registered microchip. 
  • Female dogs in heat are not permitted. 
  • Do not bring dogs that are aggressive, dangerous, loud, or vicious. 
  • Dog parks may occasionally close for maintenance. Please respect posted closures. 
  • Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult. 
While You’re Inside 
  • If your dog begins barking excessively, calmly redirect its attention and move away from the trigger. 
  • Be considerate of other park visitors by addressing constant barking promptly or leaving if loud barking persists. 
  • Reward calm behavior with praise or treats. 
  • Stay inside the dog park and keep your dog within sight at all times. 
  • Your dog should remain under your control, even when off-leash. 
  • If your dog displays aggressive behavior, leash them immediately and leave the park. 
  • Clean up after your dog and properly dispose of waste. 
  • Fill in any holes your dog digs to help prevent injuries for other dogs and visitors.
