Does Your Cart Overflow?
Mar 04, 2020
There are times when you’re recycling more than your cart can handle. Here are a few tips, tricks and management options:
1. Make sure all the items in your cart are accepted in the program.
Due to a lack of an end market there are several items that are not accepted by Rumpke, and therefore the curbside program. Some common unacceptable items include plastic bags, aluminum food pans, and plastic clamshells. See complete list: http://www.cincinnati-oh.gov/recycling/curbside/recyclable-items/
For an excellent list of recycling outlets for those items not accepted curbside, please see Hamilton County’s website:hamiltoncountyr3source.org/410/Recycling-Reuse-Outlets
2. Break down boxes.
Place them on top of or to the side of your other recyclables within the cart to avoid “bridging”. Cardboard may also be flattened and/or cut into manageable sections and placed loose next to your recycling cart. To keep it from flying down the street, you may want to wedge it between your garbage and recycle carts.
3. Ask your neighbor if you may place some of your recyclables in their cart.
4. Place items in a rigid container next to your cart.
You can use an old 18-gallon bin if you still have one, or another plastic bin of a similar size. It’s a good idea to mark it as “recycling”. Do not use a cardboard box for this purpose, as they don’t stand up well to moisture.
5. Order an additional or larger cart if overflowing is a consistent issue.
There are 3 cart (tall cans with lids and wheels) sizes-- 96, 64 & 35 gallon. For recommendations and eligibility, please see our website: http://www.cincinnati-oh.gov/recycling/curbside/cart-sizes/
You may complete an exchange or order online at 5916000.com or on the 311Cincy mobile app, or give us a call at 513 352-3200. We’d be happy to discuss your recycling situation and options!
6. Take items to a drop-off site.
Rumpke offers several large recycling containers conveniently placed around Cincinnati for dropping off bottles, cans, all paper & cardboard.www.cincinnati-oh.gov/recycling/public-dropoff/public-recycling-dumpsters/
Thank you for your recycling efforts!
