Incident Description:
Fire Companies were dispatched for a reported butane leak. While enroute, fire companies received
more information stating that there was a train derailment on Gest St. On arrival, it was determined
that there were seven (7) rail cars that had derailed on top of the CSX RR bridge overtop of Gest St.
near MSD. There was a substancial diesel leak (approximaely 1000 gallons) from the locamotive that
was leaking onto Gest St. The Fire Department was able to contain the spill. The other involved rail
cars were determined to be empty, including the butane rail car which only had residue in it, therefore
there was no additional hazardous materials released. There were also numerous power lines down.
Representatives from Duke Energy, CSX RR, MSD, and Cincinnati Fire Department ECU, all
responded to the scene to assist in mediating the situation. The EPA was also notified. MSD activated
the Millcreek Dam as a precautionary measure in case any diesel fuel had reached the Millcreek. This
action would prevent any of the fuel from getting into the Ohio River. Cleanup of the scene will take an
extended period of time and Gest St. is currently closed between Dalton Ave. and Evans St.
