Incident Description:

Companies were dispatched to 5300 Hamilton Av, Hammond North Condominiums, for a report of
structure fire at 0108 this morning. First arriving units found heavy fire conditions on the first floor
requiring a grueling, offensive effort on the part of the 100 plus firefighters dispatched to the scene as
all 18 floors had to be searched for extension of the life-threatening products of combustion and those
in peril as a result of same. As such, some residents were evacuated while others were sheltered in
place; for those evacuated Metro provided buses to protect them from the cool weather. Other
agencies that were requested to assist included CPD, Duke, Red Cross, and the Building Department.
Multiple civilians and two firefighters were transported to local hospitals for treatment; others were
evaluated on the scene and subsequently released. At this time the fire's cause is under investigation
by the CFD's Fire Investigation Unit.
