Sussex Ave Safety Improvement Project in Mt. Washington Begins

Jun 02, 2022

CINCINNATI – The city’s Department of Transportation & Engineering is beginning a safety improvement project this Monday, June 6, on Sussex Avenue that includes construction of a new sidewalk, road widening and speed humps.

The $452,000 project, which stretches between Corbly and Coffey streets and east along a short distance to Kenlee Drive in Mount Washington, is funded primarily by the State of Ohio’s Safe Routes to School grant program, as well as city funds.

Cincinnati City Council approved the project in 2020 after former Sands Montessori student Madelyn Gerker lobbied for a new sidewalk.

The sidewalk will be located on the east side of Sussex. In addition, the city is making infrastructure improvements that include a retaining wall, also on the east side of Sussex, and constructing three storm water inlets.

Sidewalk construction and infrastructure upgrades will take approximately 90 days to complete. Road resurfacing and speed hump construction will begin afterward and are scheduled to be completed this fall.

One lane of through traffic will be available during work hours with a flagger directing motorists. Both lanes will reopen after crews finish for the day.

The contractor is Montgomery-based Tri-State Concrete Construction, Inc.
