City Provides Update on Riverside Drive Hillside Movement

Aug 02, 2017

CINCINNATI - The City of Cincinnati has made "substantial progress" on the construction of a retaining wall to mitigate ongoing hillside movement along a stretch of Riverside Drive. Now, with the completion of additional geotechnical analysis, options regarding Phase II of the project are now being considered.

That information comes from a presentation from City Manager Harry Black to the Neighborhoods Committee on Tuesday, Aug. 2.  City Manager Black was joined by representatives from the Department of Transportation & Engineering, Greater Cincinnati Water Works and the Metropolitan Sewer District of Greater Cincinnati.

The presentation outlines the historical and current status of "Area 1," a stretch of Riverside Drive between Hazen and Vance streets in the East End. To date, all structural components have been installed and final completion for the project is anticipated for Sept. 1.

The report also outlines newly completed geotechnical findings by Terracon Consulting Inc., a contracted firm providing engineering services, evaluating land movement and delivering possible mitigation solutions. Just recently Terracon finished analysis of the area where Phase II of the project will take place. That report outlines three different options for a second phase retaining wall.

  • Option A. Wall construction would take place along the north right of way line of Riverside Drive.
  • Option B. A new wall would be built roughly 20 feet behind the right of way.
  • Option C. Walls would be built uphill and downhill of the railroad tracks, with the uphill wall immediately behind the townhomes.

The City prefers Option C, based on numerous construction concerns, costs and what would be most advantageous for all involved parties. However, a final decision will be made once the City discusses the options with all involved parties.
