Third Year Anniversary of COVID-19 in Cincinnati

CINCINNATI, Ohio – In March 2020 the first cases of laboratory confirmed COVID-19 were reported to the Cincinnati Health Department (CHD). The following is a summary of city, state, nationwide, and global public health data related to the pandemic. 

Cincinnati

As of March 28, 2023, CHD reported a total of 83,406 confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 in Cincinnatians between the ages of <1 year and 107 years old, with a median age of 33. The approximate rate of infection per 100,000 people is 28,000, or 28% of the population. 

An estimated 3,209 hospitalizations occurred, composed of 58% black Cincinnatians and 34% white, 45% male and 55% female.

An estimated 757 deaths occurred, at a rate of 252 per 100,000, composed of 49% black and 48% white, 50% male and 50% female.

Ohio

According to the Ohio Department of Health (ODH), 86% of the 41,924 deaths in Ohio were people over the age of 60, with a median age of 77.

Approximately 23% of the deaths in Ohio were people in long term healthcare settings.

Hamilton County reported 463 of the 9,559 long term care resident deaths in the state (4.8%).

United States

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 102,544,598 COVID-19 cases were counted in the United States, and 1,114,970 deaths occurred. 

The United States case rate is reported to be approximately 31,000 per 100,000 or 31% of the population.

The United States death rate is approximately 337 per 100,000.

Worldwide

Since the first 3 cases of COVID-19 were reported on Dec. 30, 2019, and the 1st death on Jan. 6, 2020, there have been 761,071,826 cases reported globally, and an estimated 6,879,677 deaths. 

13,282,840,500 doses of COVID vaccine have been administered worldwide since December of 2020.

Current Trends

As of the end of March 2023, hospitalizations and wastewater indicators are all trending down in Cincinnati. Community transmission level remains moderate, and the county community level remains low. 

Current Variants

There are no Variants of Concern (VOC) globally. XBB 1.5 continues to be a Variant of Interest (VOI) and is responsible for an estimated 92% or more of current cases in the United States. There are 6 variants under monitoring: BQ.1, BA 2.75, CH.1.1, XBB, XBB.1.16, and XBF.
