Interim Director Of Public Services
Gérald Checco became the Interim Director of Public Services in April 2014. He came to the department after serving nearly 23 years with the Cincinnati Park Board, Most recently as the Superintendent of the Division of Operations and Land Management. He also served as Park Engineer and Superintendent of Administration during his tenure at the Park Board.
Born in Bangui, Central African Republic, from a French/ Tunisian family, Gérald spent his youth between France and the Lesser Antilles. A gifted mathematician, he obtained a Bachelor of Mathematics degree just one year after graduating from high school. He then studied in Paris, France, two majors in tandem: Education at the Sorbonne and Engineering at the School of Public Works. He married artist Jan Brown Checco in 1981; they have 2 daughters Emilie and Amanda. After military duties as a lieutenant in the artillery, he setup his own business as a consulting engineer on projects commissioned by the family of the King of Saudi Arabia, designing palaces, mosques and gardens.
In 1984, Gérald 's young family moved to Cincinnati where they have resided ever since. Realizing that an American diploma would be essential, he enrolled at the University of Cincinnati where he obtained a Masters of Structural Engineering in 9 months. After a 5-year stint as Project Manager for a small design firm, Gérald was hired by the Park Board as the Park Engineer in 1991. He became Superintendent in 1999.
Gérald is a nationally recognized expert in parks management and has taught parks administrators throughout the nation in a program by North Carolina State University. He has also lectured internationally on parks-related topics and researched for Parks programming in Japan, France, Germany, Ukraine and China. Jan and Gérald now live in Clifton in a solar-powered house and are thrilled to be in the same city as their two daughters and three grandsons.
