Preventative Maintenance Begins on Streets in East and West Price Hill, Riverside

CINCINNATI – Crews performing full-depth patching and other prep work have moved into East Price Hill, West Price Hill and Riverside this week. Work is scheduled to start on streets in Lower Price Hill, Spring Grove Village, Mt. Airy and Winton Hills by the middle of next month.

This work is part of the city’s first comprehensive preventative maintenance program since 1999, covering a total of 262 streets in 18 neighborhoods this year.

The city plans to spend approximately $3 million annually on preventative maintenance through June 30, 2021 with funding from its Capital Acceleration Plan (CAP).

Preventative maintenance is being done in phases this summer, beginning with excavation or patching and concluding with surface treatments. All work is slated to finish by early October.

Work started in Roselawn, Bond Hill and CUF (Clifton Heights, University Heights and Fairview) in June. Work began in Clifton, Mt. Auburn and Heights earlier in July.

The type of work varies, depending on the condition of each street but generally will include:

• Repairing failed pavement bases with new asphalt
• Sealing cracks in existing street surfaces
• Applying surface treatments such as slurry, chip or cape seal

Certain work may require parking or driving restrictions. Residents and businesses affected by the work will receive notice approximately 48 hours in advance. 

The contractor also will post “no parking” signs prior to the start of work, as needed, per street. In most cases, temporary restrictions will be in place for less than 24 hours and a street will be reopened by 6:00 p.m. Violators will be towed per city ordinance.

Crews generally work 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday but are allowed to work later into the evening or on Saturdays.

All roads will be reopened to through traffic during non-work hours.

Any rescheduled work will be performed the following day, in most cases. Updates will be sent, if needed.

• Hyde Park
• Linwood
• Mt. Lookout
• Mt. Washington

About the Capital Acceleration Plan (CAP)

The Capital Acceleration Plan is improving streets and City owned vehicles to reduce long-term maintenance and repairs costs. In terms of city streets, CAP provides $69 million in additional funding for improvements over the next six years. Combined with the annual street improvement program, outside grants and CAP, Cincinnati is investing approximately $172 million to rehabilitate or resurface more than half its 2,936 total lane miles in all 52 neighborhoods by June 30, 2021. This investment will improve safety, save money, enhance the city’s business environment and raise the overall quality of life for residents.
