Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program
About WIC
WIC stands for Women, Infants, and Children. It is a special supplemental nutrition program for women who are pregnant, breastfeeding or postpartum. WIC also helps women who have children under age 5.
WIC provides:
- Nutrition education and counseling
- Breastfeeding support
- Nutritious foods such as milk, fruit juices, eggs, cereals, fruits & vegetables, whole grain foods and peanut butter or beans
- Infant formula can also be provided if needed as a supplement to breastfeeding or if breastfeeding is not an option.
Eligibility
Many working families can participate in the WIC program. Eligibility is based on six requirements:
- Physical presence: Applicant must be physically present at certification visits
- Medical/nutritional needs: Applicant must be determined to be at medical or nutritional risk by a registered dietitian in the WIC program
- Categorical: Applicant must be either a pregnant, postpartum or breastfeeding woman or a child from birth to 5 years of age
- Income: Applicant must have income within the Ohio WIC income guidelines (see below)
- Hamilton County residency
- Identification: Applicant must provide personal identifying information
