Greater Cincinnati Water Works (GCWW) will begin rehabilitating existing water mains on select streets in Fairfax and Mariemont in late September. Some homes and businesses will be connected to temporary water lines for about a month while water mains are cleaned, lined, and tested. GCWW is coordinating work with local governments and fire departments throughout this process.
To minimize the potential impact of severe weather, the work is being divided into two phases. Phase I, Fairfax and parts of Mariemont, will begin in September 2004 and be completed by December 2004. Phase II, the remaining streets in Mariemont and select streets in Madisonville and Columbia Township, will begin in March or April 2005 and be completed next summer.
GCWW’s water main rehabilitation is more cost-effective and less intrusive than traditional replacement because the same main stays in place and will be used after it is cleaned, lined, and tested. Main replacement requires digging up a whole street and laying a new main. Rehabilitation extends the life of a main another 50 years. It also minimizes the incidence of future water main breaks, increases the volume of water flowing through the mains, and maintains high quality water at the tap.
Customers directly affected by the rehabilitation project will be notified by letter prior to construction and by a reminder door hanger card. The letter will include a project brochure and answers to frequently asked questions.
