Northern Kentucky Water Project

Crossing the Ohio River

On March 4, 2003, Greater Cincinnati Water Works started supplying water to Boone County and Florence, Kentucky, via a pipeline under the Ohio River.  The 29-year contract, approved in 1999, represents one of the largest interstate water service agreements in the United States.

This agreement provides a win-win opportunity for residents of  Kentucky and Ohio. For Ohio customers, this allows GCWW to maintain reasonable rates by spreading fixed costs across a larger customer base. Kentucky customers have a continued supply of high quality water at reasonable rates. The agreement puts the City of Cincinnati, Boone County and the City of Florence in the forefront of interstate regional cooperation.

Interesting project facts:

  • The pipeline under the Ohio River to Boone County and Florence is 36 inches in diameter and 3,000 feet long.  It was installed about 30 feet below the Ohio River.
  • Average daily pumpage to Boone County and Florence is 8.2 million gallons per day. Maximum daily pumpage is 14.5 million gallons per day.
  • Water provided to Boone County and Florence represents about 5% of all water delivered to GCWW customers. GCWW's average daily pumpage is 136 million gallons per day.
