Mug Award ~ Kelly Carr

Kelly was responsible for the development, grant writing, and implementation of the B.I.K.E. program. She worked diligently with Kathy Shannon and the Police Activities League to secure nearly $4,000 to purchase 15 bikes for use by CRC. She also developed a working partnership with Wheel Fun Bike Rentals as a supplement while the grant was being researched. Because of her consistent collaborative efforts, Kelly attained 25 bikes, 40 helmets, waterbottles and bags for CRC BIKE.

Since the program made its debut in late May 2009 BIKE has served 14 CRC recreation centers and 187 teens, ages 11-17. This summer, Kelly hosted weekly rides and provided nearly 200 pre-teens and teens the opportunity to bike in nature. Every Thursday morning she loaded and transported equipment to Bass Island, awaiting eager adolescences to ride 14-18 miles on the Little Miami Scenic Bike Trail. In addition to general bike safety, Kelly’s facilitation included educational components such as historical information about the Little Miami River valley, Milford and Loveland, and included partnering with School House Restaurant to allow the youth a tour of Camp Dennison’s Farm.

Kelly began researching and developing the PAL Grant proposal October 2008 and because of her consistent efforts, CRC now has a 2009 Fall Teen Cycling program in operation serving 73 teens and hosting a CRC Girls Night Out which serves another estimated 80 youth. With a few hundred youth in just 2009 having experienced the benefits of BIKE, Kelly has stood by our tradition of Inspiring Today and Strengthening Tomorrow and it is an honor to award her this mug award.
