Arts Classes and Workshops

Most of CRC’s recreation centers offer visual or performing arts classes or programs. Class offerings vary from center to center but include dance, pottery, painting, puppetry, quilting, and artist-in-residence programs. Some centers have special arts facilities such as pottery studios, dance studios, and theaters. Many classes are available at no fee with a recreation center membership. Fee-based classes have charges to cover the cost of materials and instructors. Cincinnati-area residents may take classes at any center.

Quilt by Kate Sturman Gorman

The Cincinnati Recreation Commission and Ohio Arts Council Arts Learning Program residency artist Kate Sturman Gorman will present a series of free workshops and classes on narrative quilt making September 10 to October 3, 2007. Participants will learn a fusible web appliqué technique for making contemporary narrative quilts. Quilters of all skill levels may register for the programs.

All programs will be held at CRC’s  Kennedy-Woodford Center, 6065 Red Bank Road, Kennedy Heights. Students must provide supplies for four-week classes. A supplies list will be provided prior to class participation.  Registration is limited to 16 per class/workshop. Participants must register for the programs by September 7, 2007. For additional information contact Tom Reese at 731-7894 or tom.reese@cincinnati-oh.gov .

Artist Kate Sturman Gorman has a background in illustration and literature. She tells stories visually using the medium of the contemporary quilt. Her recent quilts are collaged portraits that explore connections between contemporary figures and characters from mythology. Ms. Gorman’s work has been exhibited regionally and nationally.

Community partners for the residency are the Ohio Valley Quilters’ Guild and the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County. The residency is funded in part by the Ohio Arts Council’s Arts Learning Artist in Residence Program, the Cincinnati Recreation Commission Foundation, and the Kennedy Heights Community Council.
