In the spring of 2007 OEQ formed an interdepartmental Energy Management Team (EMT). The objective of this team is to develop a strategy that focuses on reducing utility and fuel usage and the associated costs and promoting energy conservation. The EMT has taken several steps towards meeting that objective including the following:
- Energy audit contracts were fully executed in June 2008 and made available to all City departments.
- The natural gas contract, put in place by the City’s large utility departments, was amended in October 2008 to include all other City departments resulting in significant savings.
- The first round of Energy Services Performance Contracts were fully executed in June 2009. Energy retrofits to 35 City-owned facilities resulted in guaranteed energy savings of more than $450,000 per year.
- The second round of Energy Services Performance Contracts were fully executed in June 2010. Energy retrofits to 34 City-owned facilities resulted in guaranteed energy savings of nearly $588,000.
- The City negotiated a new electricity contract for all City departments resulting in significant savings.
