Park Description

Located at the intersection of Section Road and Ridge Road in Amberley Village, this land, 275.749 acres, known as Reachmont Farm, was bequeathed to the City of Cincinnati in 1943 by Herbert Greer French.

French Park is not only a beautiful park but also historically significant. John Cleves Symmes bought the land originally from the U.S. Congress. It lay at that time along an old Indian trail leading from the settement of Columbia at the Ohio River bank to a stockade in the hills (now Carthage). That trail is today's Ridge Road.

The original house was built by Edmund Buxton who came down the river and landed at Columbia. The house was started in 1803 and finished in 1805, all the materials including the brick being produced on the premises. The house was razed in 1957.

Today, as one drives up the long winding driveway, you have the feeling of riding down a country road toward a farm. This park has an atmosphere all is own. Once at the top of the hill you can see for miles the distant hills of Cincinnati.

In 1969, the tornado of August 9 ripped through French Park. A total of 546 trees were lost but there are still many stately mature trees throughout the park. A stone shelter house with grills stands at the park's highest elevation as well as swings and several play areas for children.

As you leave the park you can see the French home standing guard on the hill.
