Park Description

The Avon Woods Natural Area/Preserve is located only 4 miles from downtown Cincinnati. The Avon Woods Nature Center building located on the property was funded through a grant by the Land and Conservation Fund. The building construction was completed on December 9, 1970 and nature programs began March 2, 1971.

The nature preserve consists of rolling hills, hiking trails, a stream cut valley and community gardens. The trails are easy to locate and rated as moderate hiking. The forested part of the preserve is made up of mixed mesophytic forest containing climax beech, maple, tulip, walnut and hickory tree canopy. The under story is composed of buckeye and paw paw trees. Herbaceous plants include, trout lily, trillium flexipes, jack-in-the-pulpit and numerous other wild flowers.

The nature center programs serve participants citywide. They are designed for preschool age through senior citizens. Summer nature day camps and school field trips have been very popular programs.
