The Urban Forestry Program is dedicated to planting trees along Cincinnati's right-of-way areas to beautify the streetscapes that weave throughout the City's many diverse neighborhoods. More than 80,000 trees can be found in right-of-way along Cincinnati's 1,000 street miles. Urban Forestry plants three trees for every tree removed.
Tree planting is funded through the urban forestry assessment passed by City Council. Property owners pay 14 cents per frontal footage. Planting is a major budget item in the program.
Replacement Planting is a contract the City uses to replace trees removed in the right-of-way and to plant in new individual spots that were previously unplanted. Many of these sites are determined through our Preventive Maintenance program in which the City schedules contractors to prune or remove every community tree on a cyclical basis to reduce potential hazards. All removal sites are surveyed for potential replanting. Urban Forestry answers to requests by property owners to inspect right-of-way sites abutting their land for planting spots. The Urban Forestry Specialists, all certified arborists (by the International Society of Arborists), determine if a given site is appropriate for planting and which species are ideal for that site.
Contractors bid for replacement planting contracts. Planting seasons are generally from February 15 through April 30 and October 1 through December 31.
