Planting

The Urban Forestry Program is dedicated to planting trees along Cincinnati's right-of-way areas to beautify the streetscapes that weave throughout the City's many diverse neighborhoods. More than 80,000 trees can be found in right-of-way along Cincinnati's 1,000 street miles. Urban Forestry plants six trees for every tree removed. Several factors such as location, tree habit, hardiness, conditions and size determine the species of tree that is chosen for a particular area. Not all trees are appropriate for city planting.

If you are interested in planting on the right-of-way, Urban Forestry regulations in Chapter 743 of the Cincinnati Municipal Code require that a permit be obtained from the Cincinnati Park Board. You can obtain a permit application by calling the Urban Forestry staff at 861-9070. A forester will inspect the site and consider the species desired to determine approval of the permit within 15 days. If a sidewalk section is to be removed to plant the tree, contact the Division of Engineering, located on the 4th floor of City Hall, 801 Plum Street, Cincinnati, Ohio 45202.
