The greenspace vision for the Interstate System in Cincinnati is one of
reconnection...
reconnecting neighborhoods,
reconnecting natural systems,
reconnecting people to their history and sense of place,
restoration...
restoring degraded natural habitats,
restoring biological diversity,
restoring air and water quality, and
celebration...
celebrating the Interstate System as a major visual portal for visitors and residents alike,
celebrating the qualities of Cincinnati as a unique and special place,
celebrating the opportunities for public art, civic architecture and beautification.

The Interstate Highway Beautification program enjoyed outstanding success in 2000. Spring began with the restoration of the old salt storage site at Reading Road and Elsinore. This was our most challenging project of the year; an acre of asphalt was replaced with 1,000 yards of topsoil. Volunteers participating in The Great American Cleanup planted dozens of trees, junipers, perennials, grasses, and thousands of bulbs.
Park staff prepared the landscape beds and provided guidance. Volunteers from the Master Gardener program and Keep Cincinnati Beautiful provided technical expertise. The site was transformed from an eye sore into an urban oasis which eliminated environmental problems due to salt run-off.
