Fire Captain Michael A. Washington reported on a Hazardous Materials Response to the CSX rail yard in Cumminsville. This morning at 10:10 AM the Cincinnati Fire Communication Center received a several telephone calls reporting a propane odor near the CSX Rail Yard.
A hazardous material response was dispatched to the Rail Yard to investigate the odor. Initial arriving fire units reported that there was an odor of some kind in the vicinity of CSX. Upon further investigation, while working in conjunction with CSX officials, a rail car was identified as the causation of the odor.
The rail car was carrying Crude Sulfate Turpentine; UN 1993 which is used to manufacture common household products like “Pine Soil”. A small seal around a packing gland was identified as the problem. CSX officials will mitigate the situation with their response personnel.
There is no immediate danger to the public, there may continue to be a slight odor similar to Propane until the seal is replaced. This should occur over the next several hours.
